Blackbird VC

Australasia's Leading Venture Capital Firm
  • WHAT WE DID: Strategy, Illustration, Design, Motion, Development, Integrations
  • CLIENT: Blackbird VC

Blackbird is Australasia’s largest and most influential venture capital firm, backing category-defining companies across software, hardware, and frontier technology. With billions under management, they are known for investing early where conviction matters most. As the firm grew in scale, ambition, and cultural relevance, its existing website no longer reflected the depth of the brand.

Psychoactive partnered with Blackbird during an active brand refresh to strategise, design, and develop a large, enterprise-scale Webflow website. The result is a digital platform that supports founders, investors, and a growing community, without relying on traditional venture capital design conventions.

Designing for Founders First

Founders were the primary audience, often early in their journey and uncertain about where they belonged. The experience needed to feel open and human, reducing intimidation while still building confidence and trust through clarity rather than authority.

Rejecting the Expected VC Language

Blackbird were deliberate in distancing themselves from the visual language typically associated with venture capital. We designed an experience that feels culturally confident and distinct, while still communicating seriousness, credibility, and long-term intent.

Extending a Print-Led Identity

The brand system was expressive and highly considered, originally developed for print. Rather than simplifying it for digital use, we treated the website as a place to extend the identity, testing how colour, typography, and composition could evolve responsively and at scale.

Structure Beneath Expression

While the interface feels energetic and unconstrained, its underlying structure is precise. Hierarchy, spacing, and rhythm were carefully controlled to ensure visual expression never compromised comprehension or ease of use.

Making Scale Feel Navigable

The site needed to support a large volume of information, from investment pathways to community content. We focused on intuitive structure and progressive disclosure, allowing users to discover depth naturally rather than being confronted by it.

Interaction as Invitation

Interaction was used with restraint and intent. Responsive elements act as invitations rather than distractions, reinforcing Blackbird’s personality as curious, generous, and participatory without tipping into novelty.

Content as Cultural Signal

Stories, media, and resources were treated as first-class elements of the experience. This positions Blackbird as an active contributor to the startup ecosystem, giving people reasons to return, engage, and learn over time.

The website was developed alongside the brand refresh, making the process inherently exploratory. The result reflects Blackbird’s scale, belief, and founder-first philosophy.
