Illustration-Led Storytelling
From the outset, illustration formed the foundation of the project. Each scene was designed to feel like a memory, using a rough, expressive drawing style that could carry difficult subject matter while remaining accessible. A restrained use of colour and a consistent sepia tone reinforce a sense of recollection and place, grounding the story in the landscapes of eastern Syria. Every frame was hand-drawn to preserve a human, tactile quality.

Research and Sound
Accuracy was critical given the personal and political nature of the story. All sound used throughout the experience comes from Karam’s own recordings or sourced material from Syria. An original soundtrack was developed in collaboration with a Syrian musician, ensuring the audio reflects both the emotional tone and cultural context of the story.

Interaction for Engagement
Although the experience plays through like a film, users actively advance the story themselves. A simple, consistent interaction pattern keeps engagement high without introducing friction or distraction, allowing attention to remain on the illustrations and narrative.

Motion and Pacing
Motion was used to support the illustrations rather than dominate them. Transitions were designed to feel smooth and cinematic, guiding pacing and helping scenes flow naturally from one to the next. Texture and movement were applied with restraint to keep focus on the narrative.

Interaction as Invitation
Interaction was used with restraint and intent. Responsive elements act as invitations rather than distractions, reinforcing Blackbird’s personality as curious, generous, and participatory without tipping into novelty.

Language and Accessibility
Zendetta is available in seven languages, with both text and narration translated and recorded by native speakers. Each language required custom voice-over rather than direct translation. A bespoke content management system allows narration, timing, and text to be managed across all languages, ensuring the experience remains coherent regardless of language or reading direction.

Context Beyond the Story
Supporting content extends the experience beyond the main narrative. A historical timeline outlines the uprising and war in Deir Ezzor. A gallery presents Karam’s own photography from the frontlines. Articles feature personal writing, political insight, and poetry by Karam, alongside a curated directory of resources for further learning.

Extending the Impact
Alongside the experience, the Zendetta Grant was launched to support Syrian students applying to universities worldwide. The grant provides financial assistance for application fees and foreign language tests, extending the project’s impact beyond awareness into direct support.
Years after the project’s release, the Syrian regime has fallen, marking the beginning of a fragile and uncertain new chapter for the country, and lending renewed relevance to the stories captured in Zendetta.
